Scratchboard
& Wood Engraving
Whereas most mediums deal with the application of dark pigments on a white substrate, the scratchboard medium consists in carving away at a black surface to reveal a white layer hidden below. This method mimics the look achieved by wood engraving, and other relief printmaking methods, wherein the subject matter is carved into a block by subtraction. The result is an image that is bold, visceral, and timeless. I enjoy working with both of these traditional mediums while also employing the same techniques in the work that I create digitally for my clients.
